Orthodontics

More than just teenage braces. You may already know that braces straighten teeth. But what you may not know is that a beautiful smile is just one benefit of orthodontics. Bringing teeth, lips and jaws into proper alignment not only produces a great smile, but a healthy one as well. Straight teeth simply function better and are easier to clean.
The psychological benefit, increased confidence and self esteem that a healthy smile provides, can be a significant factor in the decision to undergo treatment and is often listed as a patient's number one goal.  Orthodontics is the term given to the branch of dentistry concerned with diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities, technically known as malocclusion, or incorrect bite.

What is involved in orthodontic treatment?

First, there is a series of appointments in which the orthodontist examines your mouth and determines what is required. Then, your orthodontist applies braces, removable appliances or other fixed devices to change, as gently as possible, the positioning of your teeth. Typically, full orthodontic treatment will require 18 to 36 months. During that time, your orthodontist will make adjustments to your orthodontic appliances every three to eight weeks. When the braces are removed, your orthodontist will give you a retainer and a schedule to follow that fits your individual treatment. Typically, retainers are worn full time for six to l2 months (removable retainers are just taken out for eating, sports, and special occasions). Often after six months, they can be worn just at bedtime.

I'm in my 30s. How can orthodontics help me?

It is often thought that braces are only for children. However, about 25 per cent of patients undergoing orthodontic treatment in North America are over 21. Because the basic process involved in moving teeth is the same in adults as in children, orthodontic treatment can usually be successful at any age. The health of the teeth, gums and
supporting bones will also determine the prospects for improvement.

I'm told I should have braces but
I'm embarrassed by the way they look.

Not to worry. Braces have changed a lot in the last 20 years and you do not have to get a "metal mouth" when you get braces. They are very different than in the past. The following are the most commonly used orthodontic appliances:

· Metal Braces - The original orthodontic brace covered   approximately 70 per cent of the tooth. Brace size has now  been reduced by up to 40 per cent.
· Invisible or ceramic Braces - Created in tooth-coloured   material, these are difficult to observe from a distance and, therefore, may be more appropriate for adult patients who find the low visibility appealing and who can   maintain a high level of oral hygiene. Ivisalign may be a substitute for that, these are a series of clear trays that are worn successively to achieve the final result.
· Designer-Style Coloured Elastics - Used to hold the   wires into the bracket slot, elastics now come in various fun colours from sapphire, purple, pink, green and even  black or clear.

Invisalign - Straightening is achieved by wearing a series of prefabricated clear trays that successively align the teeth.
