Root Canals

Root canal

The thought of it may send shivers, but not doing anything about your aching tooth may send you to the hospital.

Root canal is the procedure that refers to the removal of the nerve from within the tooth, it is usually performed when the tooth is too diseased to be restored and must be removed.

A typical course of events that leads to endodontic therapy would as follows:

  •   Decay sets in, breaking the outer surface or the enamel (1.)

  •   Destruction of the underlying layer of dentin until it reaches the pulp chamber (Dark red area).

  •   Infiltration of bacteria into the nerve chamber.

  •   Inflammation occurs, pressure builds up and tracks back through the only exit, down the canal to the apex of the root. (3.)

  •   The build up of pressure can cause one of several events: Swelling, throbbing pain, abscess, persistent pain on hot, cold or a combination of everything. Completed treatment

Root canal therapy consists of opening the tooth to relieve the pressure, removing the nerve, cleaning the canals and filling them with a special filler to seal the roots (1a.). All the decay is then removed and the root stump is reinforced with a core. (2a.). The entire build up is finally covered with a cap to prevent the tooth from breaking.

Although the tooth is technically non vital, it is still functionally sound and the cost of treating it is considerably cheaper than artificial implants or bridges.
