One of the most frequently asked question is :" Should I
be concerned since these are just baby teeth?" The answer is obviously yes, and
here are some reasons why:
-
Baby teeth, just like permanent teeth, can
decay, therefore abscess, cause pain , swelling and all the nasty side effects
of a bad toothache.
-
They maintain proper spacing for the permanent
dentition. An early extraction will cause the rest of teeth to shift, thus
closing the space for the adult ones to erupt properly.
-
Baby teeth also guide the permanent ones in
their eruption. An early extraction can lead the bone to close up over the
erupting adult tooth causing delayed emergence, improper positioning or a
combination of the two.
-
Baby teeth are needed for proper chewing and
digestion.
-
A healthy smile helps build a strong
personality and boosts self confidence.

Another frequently asked question is:" When should I
start bringing my child to see the dentist?"
The answer to this is: The sooner, the better. Children are born fearless, as
they mature gain more experience, exchange horror stories with their friends.
their apprehension grows.
My personal preference is 3 to 4 years of age. It is always better for the child
to visit the dentist before any potential problems develop. A simple tooth
counting/checkup is always easier than a filling the first time around, it also
alleviates any fear the child may have and allows confidence to build.
As the very old saying goes:" An ounce of prevention is
better than a pound of cure." Good habits should start early. Regular brushing,
proper eating and healthy snacking are the building blocks of the future.
